Four Sailors Granted Asylum by Sweden in Protest Against Vietnam War

Four U.S. servicemen jumped their ship, the U.S.S. Intrepid, (based in Yokosuka, Japan,) on December 29th, 1967 and made their way overland through Moscow to Stockholm, Sweden.   Once in Sweden, they applied for political asylum in protest of the “immoral” war In Vietnam.   The neutral government of Sweden, after a deliberation by an advisory committee for the Aliens Commission, unanimously recommended that the four men be granted temporary asylum on humanitarian grounds.

The sailors were Richard Bailey, 19, of Jacksonvilc, Fla.; John Barilla, 20, of Cantonsville, Md.; Michael Lindner, 19, of Mount Pocono, Pa., and Craig Anderson, 20, of San Jose, Calif.
