What began as a strike, formed by committee, and with a specific set of grievances, snowballed into a full-fledged occupation of campus buildings. Despite various setbacks, internal splits, and generalized chaos of a student occupation, the Columbia protests served as a milepost for the organizational aspects of the student movement, and ramped up the organizational efforts of the Students for Democratic Society (SDS) and other student organizations around the country.
