By February, 1968, Fred Hampton was emerging as a national figure in the Black Panthers.   The FBI and Co-Intel-Pro moved quickly to monitor his activities, including the wiretap placed on the phone of his mother, Iberia Hampton.

Later in 1968, Fred Hampton was assassinated.
