The massive coordinated surprise attack by the Viet Cong forces during the lunar new year ceasefire reached the U.S. Embassy in Saigon during the early hours of January 31st, 1968.
US soldiers took back the recently fortified embassy compound shortly after 9:00a.m., but this marked the turning point of US involvement in the Vietnam War.
Sixteen thousand more US lives would be lost in this war by the time the last helicopter left the roof of the Saigon Embassy in 1975.
